Embracing the journey; my role as a CM First Steps Trainer

Hi, I'm Steph, and I have the privilege of serving as a Centre Manager for G8 Education at Kindy Patch, Salisbury Heights.

Beyond my daily responsibilities, I also wear the hat of a First Steps trainer. This role allows me to step out into the broader G8 community, support new Centre Managers, and foster a culture of continuous improvement and collaboration.

Today, I want to share my journey and insights as a First Steps trainer, and how this role has enriched my professional life and the lives of those I work with.

My career at G8 Education began as an assistant educator and over the years, I have followed the traditional career path moving all the way up to a Centre Manager position and more recently taking on the additional role of a First Steps Trainer. Taking on the role of a First Steps Trainer allows me to extend my impact beyond my own Centre as I step into other Centre's and support new Centre Managers within their first six months. As a First Steps trainer I am provided guidance and support from our Support Office team and undertake training such as a specialised Train-The-Trainer course, to equip me with the skills needed to provide the best learning and induction experience for our new Centre Managers.

For new Centre Managers, stepping into a new service can be daunting. I try to help make this transition as smooth as possible, by providing them with the necessary support and resources. We help them settle in quickly and feel like they are part of something great. One of the most fulfilling moments is seeing a new manager grow in confidence and competence. Knowing that I played a part in their journey is incredibly rewarding.

The induction process is a critical phase where we work closely with the Area Manager to ensure that new centre managers feel comfortable and supported. We start by collaborating on the induction plan, which includes everything from understanding the day-to-day operations to getting acquainted with their team. We often support new managers during their first team meeting, this initial interaction is crucial as it helps them build rapport with their team and sets the stage for a positive working environment. We also provide them with a comprehensive workbook that serves as a guide to help them navigate their new role effectively.

Being a First Steps trainer has significantly enhanced my relationships within the G8 community, networking is a vital part of our role, it’s great to have a community of people I can collaborate and share ideas with, especially when organizing centre events, welcoming new children at the start of the year, or planning graduations, this has been a huge benefit of taking on the First Steps Trainer role.

The ongoing mentoring is another key component of the role, and this expands beyond just the Centre Manager, we often have team members from other services come in to help with mentoring and coaching and vice versa. This exchange of ideas and practices is invaluable. It allows us to see different environments and gain new perspectives; by sharing our experiences and learning from each other, we can implement best practices that benefits everyone involved.

Being a First Steps trainer at G8 Education is more than just a job; it's a journey of growth, collaboration, and continuous improvement. By supporting new Centre Managers, building strong relationships, and fostering a culture of mentorship, we create a thriving community where everyone can succeed.

Strategies for thriving in the diverse role of a Centre Manager

Hi, I'm Nicole, the Centre Manager at Bambino's Kindergarten in Fairwater. With over 15 years at G8 Education, l’ve moved through the roles of Educational Leader to Assistant Centre Manager, and now Centre Manager.

As a Centre Manager, I balance the behind-the-scenes operations with being actively present on the floor—supporting educators, engaging with families, and helping create a warm, welcoming environment for the children. No two days are the same, and that’s what I love most about the role.

I’m excited to share a little about the strategies that help me make it all work.

The Diverse Role of a Centre Manager

As a Centre Manager I oversee the administrative functions of the centre while also being actively involved in the day-to-day activities with the children and educators. This requires a delicate balance to ensure both the operational efficiency of the centre and the delivery of high-quality early learning experiences. The centre manager isn’t just sitting in the office typing on a computer – its varied from working on the floor with the children to stacking away groceries, cooking if the need arises and everything in between. The strategies that help me make it work include:

Effective Time Management

Prioritising Tasks: I can't stress enough the importance of prioritisation. I write lists all the time and love being able to cross them off. It gives me a sense of achievement. By ranking tasks based on urgency and importance, I ensure that essential duties are completed first.

Delegation and Team Support: Having a strong support system is invaluable. I am incredible grateful for My Assistant Centre Manager, Taani, whose support and dedication makes a big difference every day. We divide and conquer the tasks at hand. This collaborative approach allows us to cover more ground and provide better support to our team.

Flexibility and Adaptability: In an environment where unexpected situations are the norm, flexibility is key. Being adaptable and ready to shift focus as needed helps me stay on top of both administrative and on-the-floor responsibilities.

Building Strong Relationships

Building strong relationships with my team and the families is essential for a thriving centre. We're on the floor a couple of hours a day, giving that support where we need it. This hands-on approach not only helps in understanding the immediate needs of the children and educators but also fosters a sense of community and trust.

Celebrating Wins and Supporting Growth

Recognising and celebrating the achievements of my team is a priority for me. Whether it's a simple thank you or a more significant celebration, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of my team members boosts morale and motivation.

Staying Connected

Balancing administrative duties with on-the-floor responsibilities is no small feat, but with effective time management, strong team support, and a passion for early learning, it is achievable, and by being hands-on in my leadership role, I’m able to stay connected with what our educators and children need, ensuring I am a more effective and supportive leader.

My Journey as a Centre Manager and Mother of Four!

Hi, I’m Carley! I’ve been with G8 for almost 17 years now, starting as a lead educator and now proudly leading the team as Centre Manager at Kindy Patch Redhead. Along the way, I also became a mother of four wonderful children. Juggling these two demanding roles has been a wild ride, and l wanted to share my experiences and some tips that have helped me manage both, as well as how G8’s support has been invaluable in supporting my personal journey.

Returning to work after parental leave can be a daunting experience, it’s essential to be open with your team and leader about your needs and any adjustments you may require, such as flexible hours or a private space for breastfeeding.

The support I received from G8 when transitioning back to work was amazing; being able to bring my baby to work and receive a 50% team member discount off childcare fees made a huge difference and I felt incredibly fortunate to have a supportive team that I could trust and communicate openly with.

When you’re balancing a busy early learning centre and a bustling household, some days can feel like you’re juggling a million things at once and it isn’t always easy, but it’s incredibly rewarding. The key for me is embracing the chaos and to find joy in the little moments, something l remind myself of daily. Whether it’s a peaceful family dinner, holding a baby or a child’s joyful laugh at the centre, these moments remind me of the reasons I do what I do. Watching my children grow and learn is a constant source of joy, just as the relationships I’ve built with my families, my team and the children at the centre are priceless.

Time management has been essential in keeping my life organised. I like to start the day by , setting priorities, and tackle any urgent matters. At the centre, I make it a point to walk around and check in with my team every morning and afternoon, which helps me stay connected and address any immediate concerns.

Leaning on support systems—whether that’s colleagues, mentors, family, friends or employee assistance programs—can ease the transition. Connecting with others who’ve had similar experiences can provide both practical help and emotional reassurance. Rebuilding your routine takes time, and having the right support makes all the difference. It’s important to remember you are not alone!

Organisation is my best friend - I use planners, calendars, and to-do lists to keep track of everything. At work, we have a set roster and clear expectations, which helps manage time off and holidays. At home, we keep a family calendar to keep track of everyone’s activities so everyone knows what’s happening and when.

It’s easy to get caught up in the demands of work and family, but self-care is essential. I carve out “me time” every week—usually this is done with a good book, or listening to a podcast. Really just embracing even just five extra minutes in the car. Taking care of myself ensures that I have the energy and mental clarity to take care of others, both at work and at home.

To all the working parents out there, remember that you’re doing an amazing job! Whether you’re preparing for parental leave, navigating the return to work, or juggling family life, it’s important to be kind to yourself, stay organised, embrace the chaos and find joy in every step of the journey.

Rebecca’s 11 year journey at G8

Hi, my names Rebecca, and I’m excited to share my journey with G8 Education, a place that has not only shaped my career but also aligned perfectly with my values and aspirations. It’s been an incredible 11 years, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come and the support I’ve received along the way.

Starting Out: From Float Educator to Centre Manager

I began my career with G8 Education as a float educator, working towards my diploma. Determined to grow, l completed my diploma and took on a room leader's position. My journey took a significant turn when we moved to regional Victoria. G8 Education supported my transfer to a regional centre, where I eventually became a centre manager. This role has been incredibly fulfilling, allowing me to align my personal values with the centre’s mission.

Embracing Continuous Learning

One of the most rewarding aspects of my journey has been the opportunity for continuous learning. I’m currently part of the scholarship program, working towards my bachelor’s degree. G8 Education provides us with eight hours of study time four times a year, which has been invaluable. I’m studying through La Trobe University and have received immense support, including placements facilitated by other centres. This journey of learning is not just for my personal growth but also to mentor and guide future educators.

Mentoring Future Educators

Mentoring is a passion of mine. By furthering my education, I aim to support and inspire new teachers, helping them achieve their career goals. At G8 Education, we recognize all team achievements, big and small. Celebrating these milestones is crucial, and it’s something we do with great enthusiasm. From certificates and morning teas to team dinners, every achievement is acknowledged and celebrated.

A Supportive and Inclusive Environment

When new educators join us, we ensure they feel welcomed and supported. Our orientation process includes online training, centre tours, and one-on-one mentoring. Regular checkins help new team members integrate smoothly and feel part of the team. This supportive environment has been a key factor in our success.

Celebrating Together

We love to celebrate, not just professional achievements but also personal milestones. Birthdays, Christmas, and other special occasions are marked with cakes, morning teas, and team dinners. We plan these celebrations collaboratively, ensuring everyone feels included and valued. It’s these moments of togetherness that strengthen our bond as a team.

Looking Ahead

Our journey doesn’t stop here. With the support of head office and a commitment to continuous improvement, we are always looking to move forward and achieve greater success. The children are at the heart of everything we do, and their wellbeing and development remain our primary focus.

My journey with G8 Education has been nothing short of amazing. From a float educator to a centre manager, the support and opportunities I’ve received have been incredible. Why l love being an Early Childhood Teacher at G8 Education: Jin's story

Hello, my name is Jin, and I’ve been an Early Childhood Teacher at G8 Education for nearly seven years now. Looking back, choosing to work with G8 was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made - here’s a part of my story at G8.

Why I chose G8

When I was looking for a new role, I had several opportunities to choose from. But something stood out about G8. From the very first interview, I felt respected, supported, and valued. The person who interviewed me assured me that I would have the freedom to deliver my program with a lot of support from the team - and they kept that promise.

That sense of support has been consistent ever since. My team feels like family. Many of my colleagues have been here even longer than I have, and their guidance and encouragement have helped me grow both personally and professionally. I genuinely love coming to work each day.

A Space Where Culture is Celebrated

One of the most special things about our centre is how we embrace multiculturalism. We invite parents from all backgrounds - Japanese, French, Chinese - to share their language, food, and stories with us. The children greet them with “bonjour,” “ni hao,” and “konnichiwa,” and their eyes light up as they learn something new.

Parents are also deeply involved in what we do. Whether it’s making dumplings together or learning new words like “tabbouleh” and “turmeric,” our learning experiences are rich with cultural depth. It's not just education - it’s connection, curiosity, and kindness in action.

The joy of teaching

I’ve worked casually in childcare for over 20 years, and I’ve held jobs in other industries too - but early childhood education has always been my passion. Watching children grow, learn, and develop confidence brings me so much joy.

Graduation day is always an emotional one for me. When the children sing songs in different languages or give speeches about their time with us, I can’t help but cry with happiness. Every single year, I hold those memories close.

Growing With Support

My growth as a Teacher has been made possible by the incredible support network within G8. From our Practice Partner Jessie - who regularly visits us and inspires us with ideas and encouragement - to the G8 Library filled with expert resources, I’ve learned how to create authentic and meaningful learning experiences.

G8 also supported me through my Early Childhood Teacher accreditation. They provided examples, mentoring, and feedback that helped me through the toughest parts. I’m proud to say I achieved it - with their help.

Professional development is a big focus here. The roadshows and seminars, including “Wings to Fly,” helped me strengthen my ability to support children’s emotional development and manage challenging behaviours. Even after finishing uni, these learning opportunities have refreshed my skills and kept me inspired.

Space to Reflect and Recharge

Another unique benefit of working at G8 is the two extra weeks of annual leave we receive. That extra time helps me reflect - not just on work, but on life. I often spend it in nature, collecting materials for the classroom or simply getting inspired. The children love it when I bring those treasures into our space and say, “Wow, we brought nature into the classroom!”

Looking Ahead

I feel incredibly lucky to be where I am today. I’m proud of what I’ve accomplished, grateful for the people I work with, and excited about what’s still to come. Being an Early Childhood Teacher fills my heart, and I can’t imagine doing anything else.

I still remember walking into the centre for the first time, full of excitement and maybe a little bit of nerves - this was February 2005, and I was just starting as a trainee. Now, 20 years later, I’m reflecting with immense gratitude on the path that’s led me here.

Growing from Trainee to Leader

It’s been a journey of constant learning and growth. Over the years, I’ve progressed through roles as an Educational Leader, Assistant Centre Manager, Centre Manager, and Area Manager. Today, I’m proud to contribute as the Operations Innovation Lead in our Support Office.

What stands out most to me is the unwavering encouragement I’ve received from day one. G8 Education has always championed professional development - if you put in the effort and express your desire to grow, they’re there to support you. I've always felt empowered.

What makes this journey truly special is the people. Whether I’ve been in centre leadership or Support Office, I’ve had the privilege of working with amazing teams, some of whom have become more like family. Our shared mission - to create better outcomes for children - has been the common thread that binds us together.

I’ve had opportunities to attend the annual National Conference, where I’ve met inspiring peers from all over Australia. I've also participated in external events like the Early Childhood Australia National Conference, where I heard industry insights and learned from some of the brightest minds in our field.

Nurturing Greatness - In Children & Colleagues

The core purpose of G8 - to nurture the greatness in every child - is mirrored in how they nurture us, their people. Over these 20 years, I haven’t just grown professionally - I’ve been part of an organisation that values continuous improvement, collaboration, and well-being for both children and staff.

Looking Ahead

As I celebrate this milestone, I’m filled with excitement for what the future holds - both for G8 Education and my own journey. With the ongoing support for learning, leadership, and innovation, I’m ready to keep pushing boundaries and contributing to meaningful outcomes for the children and communities we serve.

From Aged Care to Early Education: How Laura Built a Career at G8 Education

For Laura, caring for others has never just been a job, it’s been a constant thread throughout her life. After spending 11 years working as an assistant nurse in aged care, Laura made a career change that felt both new and familiar, moving into early childhood education at G8 Education.

What made the decision easier wasn’t just a passion for children, but a shared sense of purpose that made early learning feel like the right next step.

Different path, same purpose

Before joining Kindy Patch in Queensland, Laura worked in aged care for more than a decade. The work was meaningful, but she had always felt drawn to working with children. That opportunity presented itself naturally when her own children began attending a G8 centre.

“My son started here at the centre when he was four months old, and my daughter was about 18 months,” Laura shares. “Seeing the care they took of my children and the relationships they formed every day made me realise this was something I wanted to be a part of.”

What stood out wasn’t just the quality of care, it was the way the educators supported children as individuals, creating a safe, nurturing environment where they could grow with confidence.

From trusting the centre… to becoming part of it

Laura’s journey from parent to educator began with a simple conversation. After seeing firsthand how the centre cared for her children, she reached out to the Centre Manager to explore a role as a trainee Educator.

Through G8 Education’s Study Pathways program, Laura was able to train while working, completing her Certificate III and Diploma with ongoing guidance and encouragement. Rather than feeling like she was “starting over,” Laura discovered that her experience in aged care translated seamlessly into early learning.

Three years on, Laura is now a Lead Educator, having grown both professionally and personally along the way. For many people who change careers, the biggest concern is whether they’ll be supported through the transition. For Laura, that support made all the difference.

“My Centre Manager has been amazing - she’s always helped and guided me, and she always wants more for me,” Laura says.

That encouragement has helped Laura build confidence, develop leadership skills, and imagine possibilities she hadn’t previously considered - including one day completing her Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education.

When career and family come full circle

Laura’s connection to Kindy Patch goes far beyond her own role. Both of her children attended the centre when they were very young, making it a place her family has trusted for years.

Now, that journey has come full circle. Laura’s daughter, now 16, is completing a school-based traineeship in early learning at the very same centre where Laura began her own traineeship.

“It was such a big part of their upbringing. Seeing my daughter now following her dream in childcare, at the same place I started, is really special.”

It’s a powerful example of how a supportive, values-led environment doesn’t just influence educators - it influences families and future careers too.

From Casual Educator to Centre Manager: Mystique’s 12-Year Growth Story

For many educators, a career in early childhood education starts with a simple love for children - but it’s the support, opportunities and sense of belonging along the way that turns that love into a lifelong vocation. For educators balancing study, work and life, finding the right support can make all the difference.

For Mystique, Centre Manager at Kindy Patch Grovely in Queensland, that journey has spanned more than a decade with G8 Education, shaped by hands-on learning, supportive leadership, and a deep passion for safety, inclusion and community.

Growing with G8: From Casual Educator to Centre Manager

Starting fresh out of school, Mystique began her childcare journey at Kindy Patch Grovely more than 12 years ago, initially working as a casual educator while completing her Certificate III in early childcare and education. From there, she progressed through roles as an assistant educator, lead educator, Assistant Centre Manager, and now Centre Manager - all within the same centre.

“I just really loved spending time with children and watching their curious minds,” she shares. “They are so incredible! I love how honest, raw, and curious they are, and I knew this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to help teach children and support the next generation.”

Her passion for leadership grew naturally when she took on workplace health and safety responsibilities, discovering a love for supporting the centre as a whole, while ensuring children were safe, supported and thriving.

Mystique also values the long-term career opportunities available within G8, noting that her journey is just one example of what’s possible.

The Difference the Right Study Support Makes

After obtaining her Certificate III, Mystique initially attempted to complete her Diploma through an external training provider but quickly realised she wasn’t getting the support she needed.

“I had no support, so I decided to wait a few years and then do it through G8,” she explains. “The support was so much better. My trainer was amazing, and I had my team to lean on for questions.”

Completing her Diploma through G8’s Study Pathways program made all the difference. Studying while working allowed Mystique to apply learning in real time - making the experience more practical, meaningful and achievable.

“Studying as you work makes it so much easier. You’re doing it every day, the answers come naturally - I would 100% do it again through G8.”

Being a Village for Families

For Mystique, early learning is about far more than education - it’s about connection. As a Centre Manager, she takes pride in being a trusted support for families, particularly those without extended family nearby.

“We’re so lucky to be that village for many families,” she says. “Sometimes I’m their counsellor, sometimes I’m the bright part of a really hard day, and if I can improve someone’s day, that makes me happy.”

From supporting families through emotional nursery drop-offs to remembering personal milestones and challenges, Mystique believes genuine care builds trust, and that trust can shape a child’s early experiences.

A Passion for Safety, Inclusion and Belonging

At the heart of Mystique’s leadership is a deep commitment to inclusion and safety.

“The thing I’m most passionate about is making sure all children feel included, safe and supported,” she shares. “Children can’t learn or grow if they don’t feel comfortable in their environment.”

Since stepping into the Centre Manager role, she’s prioritised professional development focused on inclusion, partnering with external organisations and investing in training that equips educators with practical strategies to support every child.

“Zero to five are the most important years of a child’s life,” Mystique says. “What we do now sets them up for success later in life.”

Feeling the support from a larger organisation

Mystique credits much of her success to the wider support network at G8 Education.

A Team That Feels Like Family

Inside the centre, Mystique leads a close-knit, committed team, many of whom she’s worked alongside for more than 10 years.

“We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and do things together outside of work,” she says. “It really creates a bond that flows through to how families and children feel here.”

“We’re a like a family here - it’s great to have the support of a longstanding team, as it really helps families and children feel safe, supported and connected”.

That sense of connection hasn’t gone unnoticed. Recently, a parent thanked Mystique personally, sharing how proud she should be of the centre and the team she leads - a moment she describes as incredibly meaningful.

Mystique’s story is a reminder that when educators are supported, empowered and valued, they can build careers that truly make a difference for themselves, for families, and for future generations.

From International Student to Centre Manager: My Career Journey in Early Childhood Education

Nine years ago, I arrived in Sydney as an International student studying my Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care, with a dream of building a meaningful career supporting children to grow and thrive

Starting somewhere new wasn’t always easy, but with the encouragement and support of my Centre Manager at the time, I was given the confidence to take the next step and apply for sponsorship with G8 Education.

From there, my career continued to grow in wonderful and surprising ways and today I am proud to lead my own team as a Centre Manager for World of Learning.

Where It All Started

My journey with G8 Education began while I was studying my Diploma in Early Childhood Education and Care in Sydney. As part of my course, I completed a placement at Kindy Patch, one of G8’s centres.

During that time, I shared my goal of securing sponsorship so I could continue building my career in Australia. My Centre Manager recognised my passion and supported me to take the next step, connecting me with a centre in Canberra, which was considered a regional area at the time. That moment became the beginning of my sponsorship journey with G8.

Growing Through Opportunity

I started as a Lead Educator, where I spent six years building my experience before progressing into an Assistant Centre Manager role. Over time, I continued to grow before stepping into the Centre Manager position I hold today.

G8 gave me the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone, those opportunities helped me grow both personally and professionally and have played a big role in shaping who I am as a leader today.

Support That Builds Confidence

The support I’ve received throughout my career has played an important role in my growth.

Before stepping into my Centre Manager role, I completed G8’s First Steps Program, a four-week personalised training program designed to support new centre leaders. During that time, I worked closely with a First Steps Trainer who helped me build confidence and prepare for the role

Day to day, as a Centre Manager, I am supported by a strong network of people, from my Area Manager to Practice Partners and Support Office teams, who are there to connect, guide and share insights. That sense of support and collaboration is something I really value.

Leading with Positivity and Connection

As a leader, I believe it’s important to create a positive and supportive environment for my team. The first thing I do each morning isn’t sit in my office - I walk through the centre, say hello to everyone, and check in with the team.

For me, strong relationships are key to building a great centre culture. We celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, and achievements together, because recognising each other’s efforts helps everyone feel valued.

We also make time to connect beyond the day-to-day, whether that’s staying in touch through group chats or catching up with our families outside of work. Those connections create a strong sense of community and make our team bond even stronger.

The Moments That Make It Worth It

At the heart of my role is the impact our team has on children and families.

One moment that has stayed with me, was supporting a family whose child was attending childcare for the very first time. The parents were unsure how their child would settle and whether they would feel comfortable in a new environment.

Our team spent time building a connection with the child and keeping the parents updated every step of the way. Over time, there was a shift, and the child began arriving happily at the centre each day and going home excited to tell their parents about the activities they had done during the day.

For me, it’s those moments, seeing children grow and confidently explore on their own, while families feel happy and excited to return each day. It’s a privilege to play a small part in building bright futures for the children and families in our care.

There’s No Limit To What’s Possible

I’ve always been passionate about building a meaningful career in early childhood education and I dreamed that one day I would sit in the Centre Manager’s chair. Now that I’m here, I want others to believe that they can do it as well.

There’s no limit - you just need to keep dreaming and you can make it happen.
